Minutes |

Karen read the minutes from the June 28 meeting in Missoula. There are a few minor corrections to be made in the treasurer’s report section of the minutes, and this can be done at the next meeting on September 27 in Missoula, MT. |

Treasurer's Report |
|
Karen read the report prepared by treasurer Donna Goss. Our current balance is $6,543.61. Separately from that balance, Donna reported that the Camp Mak-A-Dream fundraiser showed total income of $8,735 and expenses of $2,370.05 for a balance, so far, of $6,364.95 raised for the camp. Additional money will be added to this balance because some members are still sending in their $30 for tickets, and Lora Pechy, a massage therapist at the Corvallis show, is donating 20% of her sales during the show. The Corvallis show at Sapphire Event Center had sponsorships of $4,635, entry fees of $3,085, and other income of $638.38, for a total income of $8,358.35. Expenses so far total $5,404.50. That leaves a temporary balance of $2,111.02. Sponsorship chair Karen Philips has several hundred dollars in expenses to turn in which will bring that balance down. |

Correspondence |
|
Karen received a note and check from Robynn Gabel just before the Corvallis show. Due to family business, Robynn couldn’t attend the show but thanked the organization for its support and for making her feel welcome at the shows. She is show chair for the Big Horn Basin Fox Trotter Show on August 8-9 in Powell, Wyoming, and she invited all BSFTA members to attend. |

Committee Reports |
|
2008 Corvallis Show: President Bob reported that we had a great youth turnout at the show, thanks to the folks coming from Washington and Minnesota. It was the best youth participation we have had in years. The show was well organized and went very smoothly. Bob thanked show chair Cathy Olson and show secretary Donna Goss for their hard work. Their preparation really paid off. Cathy had an excellent crew helping her out, and due to all their efforts, we had a great show! Thank you, everyone who helped, for making the show such a success. The Ken Overcast concert was not well attended but Bob said Ken put on a great show and is a very talented performer. Despite the low attendance, we had lots of donations and generous financial support. That made it possible for us to raise thousands of dollars for Camp Mak-A-Dream, quite an accomplishment. |

Strategic Planning Session: Bob reported that BSFTA officers, directors, and committee chairs will meet immediately after the September 27 general meeting in Missoula to plan for the upcoming year and to develop an operating budget for 2009. In the future he said the price of fuel will impact our shows, trail rides and the number of meetings we have. That cost factor must be taken into consideration when planning for 2009. Bill Free said he would like to see more people showing, especially in the novice classes. He is willing to conduct another gait clinic in hopes that it will inspire more novices to compete. Janis Barrett suggested that we hold the clinic in Helena, a more central location. Members agreed that October is a good month because the weather is still decent and people aren’t so busy. Rae’s Arena was members’ first choice of venue for this gait clinic. Regarding meetings, Janis suggested that when we hold meetings east of the Continental Divide, we have them in Helena because it is still central for Bozeman area members. Karen stated that our current by-laws require only two meetings a year, but members felt that was too infrequent. Janis suggested quarterly meetings alternating between Missoula and Helena. Karen suggested that we combine meetings with other club activities, whenever possible. Trail Rides: Bob reminded members about the Fall Gather National Trail Ride on August 16-17 at Elkhorn Hot Springs, organized by Gail Hansen. All information for the ride is posted on the club web site (bigskyfta.org). By-Laws: All proposed changes to the club’s by-laws should be brought to the September 27 meeting. Bob has copies of suggested changes that have already been submitted to him by members.

MFTHBA DNA Testing Change: Eldo Heinle expressed grave concern about the lack of DNA testing required for foals by MFTHBA. He said to keep the breed clean, this should be required, and it has been required in the past. Eldo feels that MFTHBA keeps changing its standards and these actions are detrimental to the breed. The meeting was adjourned at 11:15. All members thanked Bob and Bill for driving so far to conduct and attend the meeting. Members who stayed then ate lunch and prepared for a trail ride following the meeting. Next Meeting: It will be held on September 27, 2008, Joker’s Wild Restaurant (tentative location), Missoula, MT at 11:00 a.m.
